London Myths Busted

Before ever planning a trip to London, I heard so many things about it. "The food is expensive and crappy." "The people are rude." "The food sucks." "It's expensive." Well all of that was so far from the truth, it's laughable. Here's a list of things I heard from people about London's lacking qualities that I discovered were untrue after visiting there.

The Food Sucks

Busted: I was bracing myself for terrible food so I booked a hotel with a kitchenette, but after a couple of meals out, it felt silly to cook. The food was awesome! The food was awesome. We dined on Thai, Indian, burgers, fish and chips, and pho. Every meal was delicious and not too pricey. A gluten free burger at Honest Burger with fries and onion rings was £15 . I personally dub London a top food spot and a place I would visit specifically to enjoy the food.

People are Unfriendly

Busted: The minute I stepped off the plane, everyone was friendly. Immigration, customs, train ticket station attendants. Everyone went out of their way to be helpful and super friendly.

The Brits are Reserved

Busted, to an extent: The tube was eerily quiet. I noticed that people mostly kept to themselves by reading, but once they're at a bar, they loosen their ties and let their hair down. They're silly and definitely rowdy. They can handle their drinks and they enjoy bar hoping, although at some point it actually turns into bar stumbling. If they happen to find a dance floor we're in for even more fun. They might not be the best dancers, but honestly, how many of us really are?

London is Expensive

Yes, hotels can be expensive and the flight to get there can be pricey if you don't shop around or don't have a flexible schedule. Once you get there though, there are so many FREE things to do and see. Not just "meh" things, but INCREDIBLE "I can't believe this is free" things. Here's a short list of museums: Tate Modern Museum of Art, British Museum, National History Museum,  Science Museum, National Gallery. They do ask for donations, but technically you don't have to donate. My friend and I elected to donate to each one, because we thoroughly enjoyed it and wanted to make sure others could enjoy it too. Our favorite was the TATE Museum of Modern Art.

 It's Cold and Rainy

Confirmed, sort of: I traveled there in November and it was overcast and cold most of the time. It also rained a few of those days. My friends who live in London say that summers in London are glorious. The days are long with sunshine from 5am to 9pm and high temperatures sitting around 70°F (21°C). There are occasional rain showers, but not as much as the autumn or winter.
