Gluten Free French Toast in San Diego

10/20/2017

What's better than gluten free French toast for breakfast? Enjoying a huge helping of gluten free French toast at the Pacific Beach Fig Tree Café in their gorgeous outdoor restaurant surrounded by flora and fauna.

The Fig Tree Café serves up a variety of gluten free and vegetarian options at their beautiful outside eatery in the San Diego area. Their staff members are well versed in handling dietary restrictions and they take cross contamination seriously, ensuring they use different containers, gloves, and cooking areas.

About 80% of the menu is gluten free, or can be made gluten free, so there are a lot of options to choose from.

The star of the menu are the French toasts. From the traditional to the exquisite, including a stuffed French toast with mascarpone cheese topped with mangos and strawberries. They really do have a French toast to delight everyone. The gluten free version is made with gluten free cinnamon-raisin bread (yum!) and there's no extra charge. Gluten free-ers wallets rejoice!

I tried the berry sweet, stuffed, and banana foster French Toast, and my favorite was the banana foster.

Although the French toast was a delicious and delightful treat I don't normally get to indulge in outside of my own gluten free kitchen, the "Breakfast Sushi" was what excited my taste buds.

The breakfast sushi consists of three "patties" stacked with rice and scrambled eggs, and wrapped with brown sugar bacon, and topped with a sweet and tangy plum sauce. Being half-Asian, this Asian inspired dish felt like I was enjoying the best of the East and West combined.

Super happy with the "breakfast sushi"
The Fig Tree Café has three locations in the San Diego area. I'm partial to the Pacific Beach location, because of the gorgeous outside seating that feels like you're in a garden. They also have a location in Hillcrest and Liberty Station and the atmosphere has more of a rustic American charm. The Liberty Station location also serves dinner, which includes gluten free flatbreads.

Next time you're in the San Diego area, make sure you stop by one of the Fig Tree Cafes and indulge in their incredible gluten free options.
