Cabo, Mexico Gluten Free Travel Guide

San Jose Del Cabo

La Lupita
Jose Maria Morelos s/n, Gallery District, Centro, 23400 San José del Cabo, B.C.S., Mexico
Cuisine
: Mexican
Price
: $$
Try
: Taste of La Lupita

This restaurant is well versed with allergies and catering to gluten free folks. Let the wait staff know you're gluten free before ordering and they'll walk you through the entire menu. The most unique dish at the restaurant was the "Taste of La Lupita" appetizer, which included sikil pak (a pumpkin seed & tomato dip), guacamole, grasshoppers, corn chips, and blue corn tortillas.  The tacos were especially delicious and I loved the beef tongue and short rib tacos. Make sure to finish your meal with some mezcal which comes with delectable orange slices.

Mariscos Chino
Miguel Hidalgo, Centro, San José del Cabo, B.C.S., Mexico
Cuisine: Mexican
Price: $
Try: Ceviche
Mariscos El China is an unassuming "shack" at the outskirts of the San Jose del Cabo historic district. The "walls" are wire fencing and green mesh and the roof consisted of straw. Don't be put off by it's appearances, because inside they offer some incredible seafood. Let them know you're gluten free in Spanish and can't have wheat, barley, or rye. The ceviche was the best menu item featuring shrimp, octopus, cucumber, onions, and tomatoes. I'm particular about my octopus, preferring it as tender as possible, and theirs's was melt in your mouth tender. The ceviche "sauce" was a light citrus dressing and enhanced, rather than overpowered, the fresh seafood. The oysters were succulent and salty. You can also have a mincheladas and ask them to replace the beer with tequila. It was basically a spicier, tastier bloody Maria.

Chula Vegan
23400, Alvaro Obregon 10, Centro, San José del Cabo, B.C.S., Mexico
The staff and owner (who can usually be found in the shop) are versed in accommodating for gluten free. The owner herself walked me through what was gluten free on the menu, which was a lot. I settled on the avocado toast and chilaquiles. They made sure to toast the gluten free bread in a clean pan in a separate area. They spread hummus on the toast before topping it with arugula and avocados. The hummus provided flavor and texture and the arugula provided a fresh, peppery flavor. The chilaquiles were well spiced and the sauce over the crispy corn chips were wonderful. Enjoy your meal with a delicious kombucha.

Cuisine: Mexican
Price: $$
Try: Tacos
We sat down at the bar and ordered two taco plates, one chicken and one beef, after ensuring with the awesome bartender Ivan that it was prepared gluten free. The plate comes with three large tacos and a side of pico de gallo and salsa verde. They have a selection of mezcals and tequilas to enjoy with your meal.

Drinks

Mixology
Centro, San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Type: Speakeasy
Price: $$
Try: Mezcal cocktails
Tucked away behind a restaurant is a speakeasy called Mixology. The bar is all outside and the courtyard is beautifully lit with purple lights and red lanterns that hang from the trees. The bar has an assortment of mezcals and tequila to try. The bartenders are a show in themselves, watching them mix, stir and shake cocktails. Most nights you can find entertainment on the stage singing and playing their hearts out.
